TalkingBoxing Interviews
Talking Boxing with JUAN MOSQUERA
WED August 3, LUKE CALLAHAN - A rising star from Panama named Juan Mosquera is about to take a leap of faith. Coming off a big knockout win for the WBA Fedecentro 140-lb title and more recently a TKO win on July 29th, Mosquera wants a shot at stardom. Chances are, you've never heard of him, but Mosquera has plans of coming to the States to showcase his talent in the near future.
The 28-year old Mosquera, 21-3-1, attempted to land well-known American prospect Kendall Holt over the past few months, however the bout never materialized. "I would like to fight Kendall Holt if he is willing to accept the fight," Mosquera said.
TalkingBoxing.com caught up Mosquera for a quick interview. Mosquera wants to get into the spotlight and understands a need to make a name for himself in the United States. Watch for Mosquera in the near future, hopefully attempting to crack the WBA's top 15 rankings as "El Novelista" does things the old fasioned way...
TalkingBoxing: Hey Juan...Thanks for taking time with TalkingBoxing...How did you get into boxing and what keeps you in the sport?
Juan Mosquera: I do not speak english very well, however my manager does who was a retired U.S. retired Army veteran...So bare with me. My desire for boxing began at a young age, in my old neighborhood, you had to throw punches in order to gain respect. Also when I first visited a boxing gym, I knew there was something there for me.
TalkingBoxing: You have twenty wins with three losses and a draw fighting mostly in Panama...Do you have dreams of coming to the US to make a name for yourself?
Juan Mosquera: My wish in life is to travel to the land of opportunity and rumble with the best there is in the US. I would love to fight for a title against WBA champ Vivian Harris, WBO champ Miguel Cotto or others like Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Kosta Tszyu. Bring them all!
TalkingBoxing: Many fans and promoters have never heard of you over here in the US, tell us what you are all about as a boxer and a person...
Juan Mosquera: Presently I am in the best shape of my life. I spend an awful lot of time in the gym. I am in great shape at all times. Luke, I dream is to make debut in the USA, that's every boxer's dream, my manager is related to Zab Judah wife, and we are waiting for the first opportunity...
TalkingBoxing: You recently stopped Ameth Diaz in seven rounds to win WBA Fedecentro Light Welterweight Title, what are your plans for your next fight...
Juan Mosquera: We are making plans now as my manager is traveling to find a good fight.
TalkingBoxing: What are your plans as far as getting a ranking...You got the regional title in the WBA and seem to be a few wins away from a top 15 ranking...
Juan Mosquera: I was hoping to fight Kendall Holt, but they decided to take on David Diaz and Jamie Rangel instead. I know I can beat most of the top junior welterweights, I just need to get into the spotlight and the rest history. My manager is a resident of the USA and he is traveling, to make some fight connections for me.
TalkingBoxing: We have a ton of activity at 140-pounds in the coming weeks...We just had the Kostya Tszyu-Ricky Hatton super-fight and then in June, WBA champ Vivian Harris lost his title and WBO champ Miguel Cotto defended his..How good are these guys and do you think you can hang with them?
Juan Mosquera: I believe I can. If the good old Lord spares me, I will be matched against some worthy contenders in the near future. I do think 'Pretty Boy' Floyd Mayweather is the best boxer in the world.
TalkingBoxing: Play matchmaker for a second...Who do you lineup for yourself over the next few fights?
Juan Mosquera: It is every boxer's dream to fight in the USA...and I hope I can fight there soon...I would like to fight Kendall Holt if he is willing to accept the fight.
TalkingBoxing: Any final thoughts....
Juan Mosquera: Luke if you could make things happen, we will gratefully appreciate all of your support, thanks truly for the interview!
