Novak Taking Advantage of His Opportunities

by Julius Stecker
3/23 - Over the past year, One in a Million Boxing, the mid-est's premier promotional company, has put on exciting, action packed fight cards. Lightweight prospect Johnny Novak, 12-1, is one of the reasons why their fight cards have consistently sold out. This Friday Night at the Radisson Star Plaza in Merrillville, IN, Novak will be testing his skills in front of his fans and Talkingboxing.com caught up with the 24-year old Novak to get his take on the fight, his career and so much more.

“Training is going really good. I am looking to stay busy for the rest of the year. I am looking at 5 more fights this year,” explained Novak.

The Hammond, IN native is a tall and rangy lightweight, who uses his quickness to take advantage of his opponent’s weaknesses. He recently dominated a limited Ryan Maraldo over 8-rounds in January and also won the Indiana State lightweight title with the win. Some fight fans might remember Maraldo getting destroyed by Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on the Erik Morales-Manny Pacquiao undercard this past Saturday. Novak took care of business much like Chavez Jr. did, taking every round of their fight.

“I am looking to step up the opposition, I want to increase the caliber of guys I am fighting. I have the ability to make 130, because I really don’t have a problem making 135 right now. I think by the middle of next year I will be ready for a regional title, then who knows after that,” said Novak.

Novak, who is a part of Octavius James’s One in a Million team, is excited about the promotional company’s recent success. They just got a big boast with the recent regional title winning performance of Greg Jones, who surprised a lot of people by capturing the NABF Cruiserweight Championship a few weeks back. Novak had nothing but glowing things to say about the One in a Million team.

“It is just awesome to be with One in a Million. Before this I was fighting for a local promoter in Indianapolis, and there were only like 200 people showing up to those fights. Now I am fighting in nice ballrooms, in front of sold out crowds and it is great. It is great to see Greg Jones win the NABF belt. Maybe it will be me next, winning a regional title at 130.”

Novak admires a lot of boxers around his weight class, most notably Diego Corrales, Rocky Juarez, and Ricky Hatton. And when asked if he wanted get inside the ring with any them eventually, he simply stated, “Possibly.” Whats the rush for the youngster. Novak wants to take the right steps, secure a smaller title and be prepared, something his team has done well to this point.

While Novak has admiration for many of his peers, he wants the fight world to know to not look past him nnd he explained to his fans not to miss this Friday night fight card.

“This Friday expect a knockout. If I don’t knock him out I don’t deserve to win the fight. I have been doing some strength training trying to increase my power, so I will be looking for the knockout. And as far as my future goes, I am looking to win a regional title maybe USBA or NABF; then who knows after that, maybe a world title shot. All I know is I am going to stick with One in a Million and Octavius James, we have a great team.”

So Novak fans don’t miss this Friday's One in a Million Fight Card, because it promises to be another exciting performance to Mr. Novak!
