With Dues Paid, Pemberton Gets Opportunity at Title
THU September, JULIUS STECKER - WBC #1 ranked super middleweight contender Scott Pemberton has more then paid his dues through the course of his career. TalkingBoxing has always tried to give the Massachusetts native a platform to speak his mind about never receiving an opportunity at a money fight. So we only thought it was right for the 'Sandman' to speak his mind after receiving the best news of his career.
On Showtime Championship Boxing, November 5th, Pemberton, 29-3-1, will be get a chance at glory, when he takes on the highly regarded IBF champion Jeff Lacy in what promises to be a slugfest. We caught up with Pemberton to get his take on the long, overdue good news.
TalkingBoxing: How are you feeling bro, and what does it feel like to finally get this opportunity?
Scott Pemberton I feels great…I wish this opportunity would have came up 3 years ago, but better late then never.
TalkingBoxing: How is your conditioning as we speak, and when are you going to camp?
Scott Pemberton I have stayed in the gym, and I stayed in shape, but I will be going to camp in the next few days.
TalkingBoxing: Looking at Lacy, he is a strong guy, with excellent power, what are you going to use to off set his strengths?
Scott Pemberton I have a reach advantage over, and he doesn’t like movers so…but I don’t want give away any of my secrets.
TalkingBoxing: I feel you on that, but anyways, in the past a lot has been made of your financial situation. Will this fight finally give you the financially security you desire?
Scott Pemberton No it won’t. I have to go in and I have to win this fight to make myself secure. I have always wanted to purchase a home for my family and myself. And with that I wanted no Mortgage payments, and while this fight will help me with a nice down payment, it won’t allow me to purchase a home out right. When I retire from Boxing I don’t want to be working 10-12 hours a day just trying to make my mortgage payments. Hopefully I can come out victorious in this fight and it will lead to more big fights.
TalkingBoxing: Tell everybody how you think this fight will play out.
Scott Pemberton I think this is going to be a very competitive fight. I am not going to say I am going to knock him out, because I don’t know what sort of chin he has. I know that Omar Sheika hurt him in the 2nd round of their fight, because I saw his legs buckle, but Sheika always seems to have a good 2nd round, he had one against me, but he couldn’t finish me off.
TalkingBoxing: Let’s switch gears, let’s talk some NFL football, and I know you are a big New England Patriots fan, what happened last week against Carolina? (Laughs)
Scott Pemberton Man they always have problems with Carolina. (Laughs)
TalkingBoxing: How about the Pat’s players, are you close with any of them.
Scott Pemberton No, I have met some of them, but I am not close with any them. My good friend Peter Manfredo Jr. knows some of them.
TalkingBoxing: Speaking of Manfredo Jr. What do you think his chances are against Sergio Mora in their scheduled rematch?
Scott Pemberton Peter is my friend, and a lot depends on his conditioning, if he is able to put pressure on Mora then he will do well. But he needs to be in good shape to go the 7 rounds, because Mora is a good fighter. I personally think it should be a 12 round fight, because I think Peter is a 12 round fighter. He would take him deep in drown him. Just like myself, you saw me against Omar Sheika take him in the 10th round and drown him in our 2nd fight.
TalkingBoxing: So do you think your conditioning will play in part in this fight with Lacy?
Scott Pemberton I don’t want to disclose that information.
TalkingBoxing: That is cool, but in closing this interview, what can we expect come November 5th?
Scott Pemberton You are going to see one motivated individual, I am not like Ali and I am not going to make predications, but I don’t believe in trash talking. I respect Jeff Lacy. But I plan to come out victorious and I look forward to bigger and better things.
TalkingBoxing: Thanks for your time Scott
Scott Pemberton Thank You.
