Talking Boxing with SAM PETER
THU July 30, LUKE CHANCE - 'The Nigerian Nightmare’ may well be the most feared boxer in the heavyweight division, with a rock solid chin and a huge punch. Samuel Peter has dusted off 20 of his 23 victims (and that’s what they are) inside the distance, and remains undefeated and looks to extend his record against fringe contender Taurus Sykes, 24-1-1, who incidently failed to keep two appointments to speak with TalkingBoxing.com on Saturday.
In this writers view, Peter has every chance of setting himself up for a title shot later this year or early next year with a win. His fearsome reputation for stopping men in their tracks has boxing fans all over the world excited. It's genuinely believed by many that this well spoken, well mannered man, may be the next dominant force in the division. I haven’t found much evidence to the contrary.
The USBA/NABF champion Peter, will attempt to take the NABA title away from Sykes on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING, live from Reno, Nevada this Saturday, July 2nd at 9PM/EST [delayed on the West Coast].
I caught up with Samuel to see how he was feeling ahead of the big fight. Ahead of time I apologise for any omissions or mistakes as we had a bad line, and I couldn’t get everything Sam said, hopefully we will be able to speak again soon on a better line after this big win.
Luke Chance: Now Sam, your next opponent is Taurus Sykes, he has lost just once, would you describe him as your toughest test yet.
Sam Peter: No, not at all. I don’t really think I’ll have too many problems with him. But I’m not going to talk about the guy, and run him down.
Luke Chance: He’s the boxer, and you are very much a puncher, will the stylistic differences work for or against you?
Sam Peter: Well, I’m not really worried by the styles. I’m just going to get in there and do what I do.
Luke Chance: He claims to be expecting to knock you out, are you at all worried by his punch?
Sam Peter: No, not at all. I have never been hurt by anyones punch, and I’m not worried by his.
Luke Chance: There was a great deal said between the two of you at the press conference. Is this personal?
Sam Peter: No no. Nothing personal, I’m just going in to do a job
Luke Chance: In your last three outings, you have fought half as many rounds as him. How big a factor do you think that could be?
Sam Peter: I’m not really worried by this. Whatever anybody brings to the table, I know I can dish it out. Hopefully I will knock him out, but whatever is going to happen is going to happen.
Luke Chance: He has said that he is stronger than you. Does his talk worry you at all?
Sam Peter: I have trained hard, and I know this is just talk from him. You have just got to know how to handle it, and it’s not a big problem to me. I don’t really see how he could be stronger than me.
Luke Chance: Should you attain victory over Sykes, where you go from there? What fights do you want. World title shot?
Sam Peter: Well, of course that would be great if it comes along. That is of course the place I want to get to eventually. What I would really also like to do is go out and fight in Africa, I would really like to fight out there some more.
Luke Chance: Now a lot of people think you are the future of the heavyweight division, how do you feel about that?
Sam Peter: Well they are right. Things are changing you know.
TalkingBoxing.com would like to thank both Ivaylo Gotzev and of course heavyweight contender Sam Peter for taking time out of his busy schedule so close to the fight. It was a real pleasure to speak to him.
