Supremely Confident for May 20th Title Defense
TUE May 17, JULIUS STECKER - Having been through numerous trials and tribulations, Ali Supreme knows the feeling of disappointment and the feeling of success. The Chicago native, who has been boxing professionally for parts of nine years, recently came out of nowhere a few months back and captured the NABF Cruiserweight Championship.
The unanimous decision over Darrin Humphrey in Nashville on March 10th wasn't the pinnacle of his career, as Supreme is looking for more and the opportunity to put his name among the top fighters in the world.
This Friday May 20th, Supreme, 15-4, will be fighting on a 'One a Million' fight card at the Radisson Star Hotel Plaza in Merrillville Indiana and TalkingBoxing.com caught up with Supreme to get his feeling’s on his career and upcoming bout.
“I am much more focused right now in my career. I have stayed grounded. Now that I am the NABF champion, I am the hunted. But yet I am hunting the other top guys as well,” explained the 32-year old Supreme.
Formally known as Greg Jones, Supreme has come from the bottom on up, taking four years off from 2000 through 2004.
Then, an epiphany occurred that made Ali realize he was destined for success in the ring.
In April of last year, fate was questioned when he was knocked out by the hard punching Chris “Cold Steele” Thomas, but Supreme persevered, when used his silky smooth style to outbox Humphrey to win the NABF crown.
“I will fight any of the top guys. I will fight [Jean-Marc] Mormeck; in fact I am glad he beat [Wayne] Braithewaite [on April 2nd]. I think it will be an easier fight with him. I am very interested in a fight with him,” stated Supreme.
Many in inside and outside of boxing forget about the cruiserweights, but right now it's one of boxing’s most exciting divisions, with action fighters like the aforementioned Mormeck, Braithwaite, Kelvin Davis and O’Neil Bell among others. There is no shortage of talent there; however, historically the division has always been the over and done weight class.
“Most Cruiserweights cruise through the division. People never stay at this weight class. But one thing is for sure, I am comfortable here, and I am here to stay.”
Friday will be Supreme’s stage, and with O’Neil Bell fighting Dale Brown this weekend as well on a separate fight card, it will be a big weekend for cruiserweights. Ali will be looking to be Supreme, and if he is, he will be one step closer to the money fight that all fighters clamor for.
