Talking Boxing with DaVARRYL WILLIAMSON
THU September 29, JULIUS STECKER - Top heavyweight contender and IBF #3 ranked DaVarryl Williamson has dealt with adversity the only way he knows how, walking right through it, not giving a second thought. 'Touch of Sleep' brings his power and skill along with a 22-3 record into the ring this Saturday night in the co-feature on Showtime as he battles friend and IBF champ Chris Byrd in Reno, Nevada. Williamson is taking an unwavering stance to make himself into the premiere heavyweight in boxing.

TalkingBoxing: How have you been, and how is training going?

DaVarryl Williamson: I am doing great. I am just exhausted right now; every portion of my workout is killing me. But I am more then excited about this fight, as is everybody around me. I am doing 200 push-ups instead of 100 push ups, instead of running 3 miles, I am running 4 and a half miles, and instead of doing 200 sit-ups, I am doing 350 sit-ups a time. They want to see the best, so I am going to be intense.

TalkingBoxing: Well what does it finally feel like to get this opportunity and are you ready?

DaVarryl Williamson: I know what I am dealing with, and I know this is going to be a fight. I know very well that I can't afford to slip up. Boxing is a mental game as well as a physical, so I have to be in tip-top, shape both mentally and physically. As you know, I started boxing at 25, so people who came down on me because I am 37 years old, don't know how dangerous I am, because like an expensive high performance vehicle, I get better with time. I have been taking care of my body throughout the years.

TalkingBoxing: Do you think Chris Byrd is going to come in there Saturday, and underestimate your power, because you are a big puncher?

DaVarryl Williamson: Chris Byrd already understands what I bring to the table, because we have been in the ring numerous times, so I don't believe he will underestimate me. He is a good friend of mine and one of my biggest fans. In fact his wife and my wife sat together at my last fight. But in regards to him being ready, I think he will be ready for a very difficult fight.

TalkingBoxing: You are one of the most articulate fighters in boxing, so if you win, will you try to be a spokesman for the sport of boxing?

DaVarryl Williamson: It would be huge for me to be a spokesman for the sport if I became heavyweight champion. Boxing has allowed me to receive a master's degree, and boxing has been very good to my family and myself. It would be an honor to give back to a sport that has given me so much.

TalkingBoxing: In closing this short interview, what can we expect come Saturday October 1st on Showtime Championship Boxing?

DaVarryl Williamson: You can expect a well prepared guy, who is ready to showcase his talent. Expect me to win in a classy way. I want to win with class and honor. I consider this a privilege to fight for the title, and I am going to cherish this moment. I am looking forward to it.

TalkingBoxing: Thanks for your time and good luck!

DaVarryl Williamson: Thank You.

Said 'Touch of Sleep':

"Is this a dream come true? You better believe it! This is it, baby! I have waited my whole life for this opportunity.

"I feel great. It's a little tough keeping all this energy bottled because I am so ready to break loose. But Saturday is coming. It just can't get here soon enough.

"For me, this world title fight is happening at just the right time. At one point, I may have thought it should have come a bit sooner. Others may have thought it should have come a bit later. But, bottom line for me is that it couldn't have come at a better time. The timing is perfect.

"The biggest key for me is that I have to outthink Chris Byrd. But I also have to be faster, smarter, quicker and punch harder. But outthinking him under pressure in the biggest key.

"I have to make him make a mistake and take advantage. I know he is going to try and do the same thing to me.

"I feel very good about this matchup. I am very confident.''
