He’s been on top of the game for decades now and as he's still one of the sharpest men in Boxing with a passion for promoting the best Hispanic fighters around Bob arum has capitalized on this idea and has made a career and a top world renowned company off of it. As he reaches twilight years of his career, Arum still continues to be very active in promoting some of the best cards around and pulls no punches when it comes to his thoughts and his ideas in the game of Boxing.
TalkingBoxing: After this fight what’s next for Erik Morales?
Bob Arum: If he wins this fight, he’ll probably fight Zahir Raheem in May. If he losses the fight, the contracts call for an automatic third fight.
TalkingBoxing: What’s the story with Zahir Raheem, he was supposed to fight on the undercard and then he pulled out do you know what’s going on with him right now?
Bob Arum: Sometimes when a fighter beats someone like Morales he thinks he thinks the world is going to change, well it doesn’t you beat the man but you’re not the man.
TalkingBoxing: Castillo has recently been quoted as saying that after the Corrales fight he wants to fight Miguel Cotto, is that a fight that can be made?
Bob Arum: Well Castillo has a tough job ahead of him fighting Corrales in El Paso on February 4th, Cotto is fighting Gianluca Branco in Puerto Rico March 4th if they both win it is my intention to match them against each other. That’s a hell of a fight a Mexican against a Puerto Rican.
TalkingBoxing: That’s looks to be a big fight with the fans.
TalkingBoxing: Margarito’s been a world Champion since 2002 longer than most of these fighters, fighters have won titles, lost titles and won titles again all while Margarito has held his title. What can you do to get Margarito the recognition and the big fights he deserves?
Bob Arum: Margarito will beat any welterweight out there he is the best Welterweight in the world and I’ve had a lot of difficulties with the networks but believe me after February 18th you’re going to see him break through he’s going to fight a lot of big fights. Don’t worry he is too good a guy not to get the recognition he deserves.
TalkingBoxing: I’m very active with the fans and the Boxing forums and most knowledgeable fans that Margarito is the best Welterweight out there and they’re just waiting for him to break through and get those big fights he deserves.
Bob Arum: Well the fans can help me a lot they can send letters to HBO and Showtime and say we want to see Antonio Margarito the best Welterweight in the world on your network.
TalkingBoxing: What’s the status of the Marquez brothers?
Bob Arum: I don’t know Beristain; you need a Psychiatrist to deal with him. I don’t know, I just don’t know the guy is Looney tunes I would hope that we have big fights for them and that we’d be able to work something out. Martin Castillo wouldn’t just fight he would love to fight Rafael Marquez, that’s a hell of a fight.
TalkingBoxing: There are a lot of big fights that can be made between Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions is there anything on your end that’s stopping these fights from being made?
Bob Arum: We have absolutely no problem giving them money for one their fighters to fight our fighter. Generally, if they made an offer for one of our fighters to fight one of their fighters we would entertain it. But we’re not going to do business with them as partners in a promotion because in our opinion they don’t know what they’re doing.
