Talking Boxing with JOAN GUZMAN
WED September 6, PHILLIP DIAZ - Never one to back down for a challenge, former 122-lb champ Joan Guzman made a quick stop at featherweight last year and now finds himself ready to take on WBO super featherweight champion Jorge Barrios on September 16th, live on HBO. Coming off an easy decision win over former champ Javier Jauregui in May, Guzman is ready for this shot and focused on Barrios. “I eat, run, lift weights, spar, go shopping - whatever I’m doing, I’m thinking about Barrios and that title of his," said Guzman at a recent workout. TalkingBoxing caught up with Joan this past week and snapped a few photos as he prepares for his title fight...
TalkingBoxing: What’s are your thoughts regarding Barrios stating that he’s coming to Vegas to knock you out, and not to party?
Joan Guzman: He’s just talking to talk. I’m going to knock him out, let’s say in the 4th round. I’m going to be invisible in there; very elusive it’s going to be like he’s fighting himself.
TalkingBoxing: You look really strong at this weight, you used to have a little trouble making 122; do you feel much stronger at this weight?
Joan Guzman: It’s much better at 130 because I don’t have to lose so much weight. I have professionals working with me now; I’m now working with a nutritionist.
TalkingBoxing: There are a lot of famous Baseball players from the Dominican, did you ever play ball as a kid? If so what made you decide to take up Boxing rather than Baseball?
Joan Guzman: I’m friends with many Baseball players; Pedro Martinez; and as many of you know us Dominicans are good at Baseball. I liked playing baseball as a kid, but my size didn’t help me so I started to train for boxing at a very young age. I always liked playing baseball, I used to play with my friends before, but now I just go to watch them play.
TalkingBoxing: Assuming everything goes as planned in this fight, what big fights can we look forward to in the future, Manny, Barrera?
Joan Guzman: Any of the big fighter’s out there willing to give me a chance, it doesn’t matter, I’ll fight anyone.
