Talking Boxing with WBO Champion Carlos Quintana
FRI May 30, JAMES STILLERMAN - WBO welterweight champion Carlos Quintana, 25-1, is less than two weeks away from a highly anticipated rematch with Paul Williams on Showtime Championship Boxing, June 7th at 9PM/EST. Quintana, in his biggest win to date, won the WBO crown with a 12-round unanimous decision over Williams back on February 9th. Quintana, who feels he still isn't receiving the proper credit for his title winning effort, is gracious enough to give Williams the first crack at the title. The second fight between these top five Ring Magazine rated welterweights will be taking place in Connecticut at the Mohegan Sun Arena in what should be another great fight.

Quintana was gracious enough to take time out of his busy training camp to answer some pressing questions about his upcoming fight and here is what he had to say, translated through trainer, Jose Bonilla.

James Stillerman, TalkingBoxing: How is training going for the fight against Paul Williams on June 7th at Mohegan Sun?

Carlos Quintana: His training is going really well. He's training extremely hard for this fight because Paul Williams is a good fighter and we know he’s going to be in great shape. So, Quintana will be in perfect shape by the time the fight rolls around and will be ready to go the full twelve rounds at full speed.

James Stillerman, TalkingBoxing: Why were you so eager to grant Williams a rematch?

Carlos Quintana: Paul Williams gave Quintana the opportunity to fight for a title belt and so we are returning the favor to him. We are allowing him the chance to win his title back.

James Stillerman, TalkingBoxing: What kind of emotions did you have following the upset victory over Williams and winning your first world title?

Carlos Quintana: Quintana feels great winning his first world title and beating a world class boxer in Paul Williams but he’s still mad that no one gives him the respect he deserves for winning that fight.

Quintana should be considered one of the best welterweights in the world and yet no one agrees with him. Even Paul Williams and his promoter Dan Goosen showed no respect when they didn’t credit him with winning the fight. Instead, they said it was not their night. Getting no respect just motivates Quintana even more to win this fight in even more convincing fashion.

James Stillerman, TalkingBoxing: Have you seen any tape of Williams and if so have you seen any weakness you can exploit?

Carlos Quintana: We’ve watched a lot of Williams on tape including his last fight against Quintana. Watching those tapes has helped us be completely ready for whatever Williams throws at Quintana.

James Stillerman, TalkingBoxing: Do you think Williams will being anything different to the table in this fight as opposed to the first fight?

Carlos Quintana: Paul needs to do some things differently in this fight to win. He needs to start faster and use his height advantage more but none of that will matter though because Quintana is still going to win. Nothing he does differently in this fight will change the outcome of the first fight.

James Stillerman, TalkingBoxing: Does Williams posses any strengthens that could pose a problem for you?

Carlos Quintana: He's not worried about Paul Williams. Williams is a strong fighter who trains really hard and works hard in the gym. He's very dedicated to this sport and we expect him to be fully ready for this fight. But, Quintana also trains really hard so we are not worried about any of Williams` strengths.

James Stillerman, TalkingBoxing: If you win who do you want to fight next?

Carlos Quintana: We are not thinking of any other opponent other than Williams. He has got our undivided attention. Once we win this fight than we’ll think of future opponents but as now Paul Williams is the only fighter we are thinking of.

James Stillerman, TalkingBoxing: What are your goals for the future?

Carlos Quintana: Quintana wants to win as many fights as he can to make some money to take care of his wife and four children and make sure they are financially set for life and to allow his children to obtain an good education. He also wants to win more belts and move up in the world rankings.

James Stillerman, TalkingBoxing: Any closing thoughts?

Carlos Quintana: We both want to thank you for interviewing Quintana and he wants everyone to come out and watch his fight on June 7th because he’s going to win this rematch over Paul Williams even more convincingly.

Much thanks to Jose Bonilla and Carlos Quintana for their time!
