Calzaghe Stops Veit, Again
SUN May 8 - Joe Calzaghe successfully made his 17th WBO super-middleweight title defense, scoring a sixth round stoppage over German challenger Mario Veit to improve to 39-0 with 31 knockouts.
After dropping Veit, 45-2, late in the fifth frame, Calzaghe went for the knockout in the sixth when Veit's corner stepped in to halt the fight. This was Veit's second attempt at beating Calzaghe after losing by first round knockout in 2001.
Corrales Comes from Behind to Win
SUN May 8 - In the main-event on Showtime Championship Boxing from the Mandalay Bay Casino in Las Vegas, Diego Corrales dug deep after getting dropped twice in the tenth round to score one of boxing's greatest come from behind knockouts.
Corrales battled Jose Luis Castillo tooth-and-nail for the first 10-rounds in a complete war and also fought with a swelling eye that looked like it could prevent him from seeing about the eigth round on. Castillo himself had a cut opened up over his left eye some-time in the fourth round, but it didn't seem to effect him as greatly.
Words will not do this fight justice as the pair of warriors poured their hearts and punches out for all to see from the opening bell. After nine complete rounds, TalkingBoxing.com had the fight in favor of Castillo by a single round. The dramatic tenth saw Castillo drop Corrales with a beautiful left hook and again with another hook. Corrales dropped his mouth piece both times, but the second time referee Tony Weeks deducted a point, which bought Corrales some much needed time.
Just seconds after the second knockdown, Corrales caught Castillo against the ropes landing a flurry of shots that forced Weeks to stop the bout at 2:06 of the round giving Corrales the WBC and Ring Magazine lightweight titles. More to follow!
In the co-feature, WBA/IBF featherweight champ Juan Manuel Marquez retained his title via a wide, unanimous 12-round decision over WBA ranked contender Victor Polo, taking scores of 119-108, 118-109 and 120-107.
Aside from a straight right hand that sent Polo down in the seventh, Marquez and Polo seemed to fight at a good pace, with Marquez simply landing the better blows.
