'Anybody, Anywhere': Duva on Peter's Next Foe
WED July 6 - Dino Duva has always found patience to be a virtue that has held him in good stead. Now, however, after undefeated Samuel Peter’s resounding second-round knockout Saturday night, that adage is out the window.
“Samuel’s performance Saturday night proved to me we don’t have to wait, hold back or be patient any more,” said Duva, following Peter’s quick and devastating, nationally televised knockout of Taurus Sykes in Reno, Nev., to retain the North America Boxing Federation and United States Boxing Federation heavyweight championships and add the North American Boxing Association title.
“Before the bout, before I saw Samuel in action Saturday, I was prepared to remain patient and pick his spot,” continued Duva, president of Duva Boxing. “But not now. Not after this impressive showing. Samuel’s ready for any contender, any champion.
“He’ll fight anybody, anytime, anywhere.
“It doesn’t matter who Samuel fights. It’ll be whoever dares get in the ring across from him.”
The win gives the 24-year-old Peter, originally from Nigeria but now living in Las Vegas, Nev., a record of 24-0 with 21 knockouts.
“Samuel’s ready for and worthy of a world title shot immediately,” said Duva, promoter of Peter, who’s aptly dubbed “The Nigerian Nightmare.” “I believe with this latest sensational victory, Samuel has established himself as the No. 1 contender in the world.
“We’d love to go for a world championship in Samuel’s next fight,” said Duva. “But if that doesn’t happen then we’ll keep active with a fight against another ranked contender.”
Duva said Peter most likely will fight again during the fall, and then added, “Very soon, Samuel will be recognized as the best heavyweight in the world.
“Frankly, many people right now believe, and with good reason, he’s the best heavyweight in action,” said Duva. “But once he gets a belt and makes it official, there’ll be no question whatsoever.”
Guzman Innocent of Any Wrong Doing
WED July 6 - Jose Nuñez, manager of former W.B.O. Super Bantamweight Champion Joan Guzman, stated earlier this afternoon that Guzman had nothing to do with the false allegations filed against W.B.O. President Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel in the Dominican Republic. All charges against Valcarcel were dropped by the Dominican justice system as of yesterday, due to insufficient evidence.
It been reported that Guzman may have been involved in the fabrication of the charges against Valcarcel. “Although Guzman had some knowledge of what his former manager, Rafael Guerrero, was planning against Valcarcel, Guzman took no part in the actual development of these charges or events,” stated Nuñez.
Guzman’s manager went on to say, “Guzman was under a lot of stress when Rafael Guerrero was guiding his career and witnessed many events that he would have never partaken in on his own. This and other events led to the break from Guerrero.”
Guzman currently training for his initial bout as a featherweight on August 26th, 2005, in White Plains, New York, made it clear that he is willing to testify against his former manager to clear his own name of any charges.
Nuñez finished by saying, “We regret all the pain and suffering that Mr. Valcarcel and his family have endured within the past year and Guzman and I are willing to do anything within out power to rectify the situation.”
Guzman, who vacated his W.B.O. Super Bantamweight Championship in recent weeks, will face number one ranked W.B.O. Featherweight Terdsak Jandaeng of Thailand in his August 26th bout.
