Kotelnik in for a tough night against Witter
FRI July 8 - Jr. welterweight top contender Andreas Kotelnik will be in action this weekend, other than the majority of his stable mates who are taking several weeks off during the promotional summer break of Universum Box-Promotion during July and August.

On Saturday, July 9, the 27-year-old Kotelnik is challenging European title holder Junior Witter in the champion’s backyard in Nottingham, England. Kotelnik and Witter have been beaten only once in their impressive professional careers. Witter, regarded as the favorite over Kotelnik, is holding the European title since he knocked out Italian Salvatore Battaglia in the second round in June 2004.

“You have the chance to conquer every opponent”, coach Michael Timm said. “Recently we witnessed two big surprises in this weightclass when Vivian Harris and Kostya Tszyu lost by knockout. Everybody must lose one day. Why shouldn’t we be able to defeat Witter in his home country?”

Witter, 31-1-2 (19), is holding two more championship titles beside the European belt. The 31-year-old Englishman is also the British and Commonwealth champion. His single defeat came against American Jab Judah in June 2000, a loss that is very acceptable as Judah is currently regarded as best welterweight fighter in the world. Witter dropped a unanimous decision against him. However, two draws in the early stage of Witter’s career furthermore mar the perfect picture of his record, something that team Kotelnik may give additional hope and confidense.

According to Timm his charge Andreas Kotelnik, a 2000 Olympic silver medalist, is highly motivated and not intimidated by the class and background of his opponent.

„Andrej is extremely goaded by the fact that his stable mate and countryman Wladimir Sidorenko became world champion this year [Sidorenko won the WBA bantamweight title on Februrary 22]. Andrej has not forgotten his ultimate goal to win a world title. Another motivation was that he witnessed the defeat of Vivian Harris who many believed would dominate the division. Andrej is prepared and we are confident that we will be able to do our job in England.”

Kotelnik, 24-1 (11), was holding the WBA intercontinental title from 2003 to 2004 and climbed to top-5 positions of the major boxing organizations during that time. However, he dropped a close split decision to Frenchman Souleymane M’baye on October 21, 2004, in Paris in a WBA world title eliminator.

The independent rankings of Boxrec.com list Junior Witter on No. 5. Kotelnik is ranked No. 12.

„Andrej has learned form his defeat against M’baye gelernt“,Timm said. „He didn’t follow our game plan then. Instead he tried to do it his own way. Now he knows: If he wants to win outside Germany he has to do fireworks. On Saturday he’s not only fighting Witters but also the crowd.“

Codrington Headlines Aug. 4th
FRI July 8 - Who will be the king of Queens? It will be Queens vs. Queens when undefeated knockout artist Jaidon Codrington (8-0, 8 KO's) of Queens (by way of Bridgeport, CT) will headline the August 4th edition of Broadway Boxing when he faces Levan Easley (17-11-2), also of Queens, in a 10 round bout for the vacant New York State Super Middleweight Title at the Grand Ballroom at Manhattan Center, it was announced today by promoter Lou DiBella at Gallagher's Steak House.

Codrington will put his 8 for 8 knockout streak on the line in the August showdown with Easley. "The Don" has put forth a professional career thus far that can only be described as dominant. The 21-year-old phenom has become a crowd pleaser at the Manhattan Center evening fisticuffs, and his last fight, another first round KO over Etienne Whitaker on April 28, was no different.

Codrington will be joined on the card by his "Chin Checker" partner Curtis Stevens (7-0, 6 KO's) of Brooklyn, who will square off in another super middleweight contest slated for six rounds. Stevens duplicated Codrington's heroics in the first six fights of his career by reeling off six consecutive KO triumphs. His knockout steak was ended on April 28 when Shannon Miller took him the distance. But the unanimous decision victory lifted Stevens' immaculate record to 7-0, and he looks to start another KO streak on August 4.

Emmanuel "Sleek" Clottey (22-6, 14 KO's) has captured four of his last five contests, including a convincing, 10-round unanimous decision over Michael Warrick at Mohegan Sun on October 21, 2004. Clottey returns to the ring after a 10-month hiatus. A native of Accra, Ghana, which has produced such stickouts as former world champions Azumah Nelson and Ike Quartey, Clottey now fights out of the Bronx. The 31-year-old ring veteran has come into his own since scoring the biggest victory of his career - a 10th round knockout over former Olympic gold medalist Muhamad Abdulaev on June 3, 2003 at Mohegan Sun.

New York City native Peter "Kid Chocolate" Quillin (1-0, 1 KO) scored an awesome first round knockout victory in his pro debut at the Manhattan Center, and returns to the ring at the scene of his professional bow trying to make it two for two as a pro.

Tough-minded Brooklynite Sam Elashry (5-3, 1 KO) will see action in a four round cruiserweight bout. James Moore of Ireland will be making his professional debut in a four round junior middleweight affair on the card.

The August 4th edition of Broadway Boxing is promoted by DiBella Entertainment and Damon Dash and is sponsored by HBO Sports Locatestock.com, and Gallagher's Steak House.

The doors open at 6:00 PM, and the first fight is at 7:00 PM. Tickets are priced at $100, $75, $50, and $35 with special VIP floor tickets also available, call DiBella Entertainment at 212-947-2577 to order.

Duddy Tackles Coleman in Chitown
FRI July 8 - Undefeated Irish middleweight John Duddy (10-0, 9 KOs) faces veteran Patrick Coleman (29-11, 20 KOs) July 20 in the eight-round main event of a Bobby Hitz-promoted show at 115 Bourbon St. in Chicago.

Derry, Ireland native Duddy, now fighting out of Queens (NY), has quickly become one of the most exciting prospects in boxing. "I'm looking forward to fighting in Chicago for the first time," he said. "I have some friends that I fought with in Ireland who are living in Chicago, so I'm sure I'll receive a good reception. Coleman is an experienced fighter who has 29 wins. I've trained as hard as ever for this fight and hopefully this fight will help keep me moving up the ladder."

Coleman holds victories against two former world champions, Saoul Mamby and Jose Antonio Rivera, and he's also fought the likes of Buddy McGirt, Teddy Reid and Vitali Kopitko.

Duddy is coming off an eight-round unanimous decision (80-72 on all three cards) June 11 against Patrick Thompson at Madison Square Garden.

"I'm glad my first fight to go the distance was at Madison Square Garden with all those people there to see that I'm not just a bull, but a boxer-puncher. He (Thompson) fought a smart fight and he took some good shots. As much as I may spar eight or 10 rounds in the gym, I needed to confirm that I could go eight rounds in a fight. I finished so strong that I was happier than if I'd won by first-round knockout."
