KEA Boxing Scores a Knockout | Sanchez KO's Alvarez

4/11 - KEA boxing put on the best small show in NJ that there has been for many years. Everyone in the packed ball room in the Hanover Marriott in Whippany, New Jersey, got more bang for their buck then they could have imagined.

Fans got to see a former world champion still at or near his prime, a few undefeated prospects, both male and female, tough decisions and brutal knockouts. Most impressive of all was that all 7 bouts that were announced came off as scheduled. Promoter Andre Kut was happy with the results. He said he was pleased that he was once again able to give the fans what they wanted. Kut has plans to continue putting on regular shows in New Jersey, and to continue to promote his shows with the professionalism required to give the New Jersey fans the world class shows they deserve.

In the main event former WBO Jr. featherweight Agapito Sanchez (34-11-3, 17 KO's) scored a TKO over Ivan Alvarez (19-18, 8 KO's) in round number 8. After getting dropped in round 1 Alvarez fought a competitive fight, while Agapito settled into his familiar style as the better boxer. In the 7th round Sanchez lost a point for a low blow, but Alvarez was the one entertaining the crowd as he jumped and rolled around. Referee Eddie Cotton took a point form Sanchez. In round 8 Sanchez dropped Alvarez again, this time with a clean body shot. Alvarez beat the count and returned fire with a low blow to Sanchez, for which the referee deducted a point from Alvarez. Alvarez, who had taken a decent amount of punishment from Agapito, did not answer the bell for the 9th.

In the co-feature, Middletown's junior middleweight Johnny Molnar (20-2-2, 11 KO's) battled crafty veteran, Spokane, Washington's Dumont Welliver (15-15-1, 4 KO's). The action started fast in this one as they both banged inside and Molnar went down from a low blow. Welliver came to win, so when it appeared Molnar may have been landing the better leather inside he hit Molnar low again. Referee Eddie Cotton took a point from Welliver for the low blow in the 4th and for hitting on the break in the 5th. Welliver tried every trick he had and both guys closed the show trading punches. Molnar was awarded a unanimous decision by scores of 58-54, 60-52 and 57-54.

No one left after the main event as the last bout of the evening was no was no ordinary walk out bout. Lynhurst, New Jersey's Light-Heavyweight prospect Wayne Johnson (8-0, 6 KO's) won by way of KO in the second round. Johnson fought a very patient first round feeling out Las Vegas's hard punching Salah Zabian (5-5, 4 KO's). When he found his opening to the body he took it, and when Johnson caught Zabian in the corner, he never let him out. It seemed like the sold out crowd was all there for Johnson as he unloaded everything he had on Zabian until he dropped him with a big right hand and Zabian fell face first for the full 10 count.

There were also two women's fights as the dangerous up and comer Cindy Serrano (8-0, 5 KO's) won a unanimous decision, over a fighter who showed the most heart all night, the rugged but out-gunned Sharon Gaines (5-4). Gaines was dropped at the final bell, and the referee looked ready to waive it off, but she valiantly beat the count and lost the fight on the scorecards.

Hoboken's Wendy Lamotta (2-0) returned to the Marriott and won a unanimous decision over Camile Casson (0-2). Undefeated Pawel Wolack (5-0, 3 KO's) stopped Reggie Avent (3-10, 2 KO's) with a right hand at 2:42 of round number 1. In the opening bout where it appeared that somebody's 0 must go, no one's did, as Victor Barnes (0-4-1), battled Henry Dukes (0-5-1), to a draw, what were the odds of that happening?
