Peden Stops Campbell in Eight, Wins IBF Super Featherweight Title
2/23 - Australian Robbie Peden scored a knockout victory over Nate Campbell tonight at Vodafone Arena in Melbourne to claim the IBF super featherweight title.
Peden, 25-2, was punishing Campbell against the ropes when referee Johnny Wright stopped the fight just 7 seconds from the end of the 8th round. The decision left Campbell, 25-3-1, upset after the fight. "It was hard for me to fight everybody, you can't fight the referee," Campbell said. "I would never fight here again, never, not against anybody."
Peden, who had previously stopped Campbell last March, was ahead on the cards at the time of stoppage by scores of 68-66 [twice] and 66-65. A cut of contention occured in the 4th when a gash opened over the eye of Campbell, who claimed it was from a headbutt. But after checking with all three judges, the referee ruled the cut happened from a legal punch.
Peden continued to work over the cuts and finally got a stoppage. "Now they can come to me, I'll put my belt on the line," Peden said after the bout.
Undercard action had IBF #1 middleweight Sam Soliman knocking out Miguel Julio in the 4th. Also, Shannan Taylor defended his IBF Pan-Pacific 154-lb title with a 3rd round knockout of Ruben Diaz. Discuss at the FORUM
