Say It Ain't So, Joe: An All-Time Great Hangs Em' Up
FRI February 20, JAMES STILLERMAN - After months of speculation, all-time great Joe "The Pride of Wales" Calzaghe finally announced his retirement on February 2nd stating his mother and children wanted him to retire and that he had accomplished everything he wanted to do in boxing.

The thirty-six year old, highly-skilled southpaw has certainly accomplished a great deal over his sixteen-year boxing career that began in 1993 with a first round technical knockout over Paul Hanlon. Calzaghe retired with an undefeated record of 46-0...

Sergio Gabriel Martinez Robbed After Beating Kermit Cintron, Ends with Draw
MON February 16, FRANK GONZALEZ JR. - How do you outbox your opponent all night, score a knockdown, where your opponent got to continue after being counted out and then with nary a mark on your face after 12 rounds, have the fight ruled a Majority Draw? Maybe we should ask Ged O’ Connor and Peter Tremetera. This wasn’t in Montreal and the referee wasn’t Marlon B. Wright.

Campbell Beats Funeka but Lost Titles on the Scale
SUN February 15, FRANK GONZALEZ JR. - After eleven months of inactivity, Nate “The Galaxxy Warrior” Campbell (33-5-1, 25 KO’s) was finally back in action Saturday night at the Bank Atlantic Center in his home state of Florida, where he failed to make the contracted weight of 135 pounds and lost his WBA/IBF and WBO titles on the scales before the first bell rang to start the fight against Ali Funeka (30-2-2, 25 KO’s) of South Africa.

Weighty Issue: Campbell Comes In Heavy
FRI February 13, BRIAN BLAKE - Lightweight champion Nate ‘Galaxxy Warrior’ Campbell weight in 3 pounds over the weight limit for his bout tomorrow night with challenger Ali ‘Rush Hour’ Funeka. Campbell now has two hours to get down to the 135 lb. limit. Funeka weighed in at 133.5 lbs., a pound and a half under the limit. If the weight is not lost and the fight goes on anyway Campbell will automatically forfeit the titles and could be taken by Funeka provided he wins the bout.

Super Fly Darchinyan TKO's Arce in 11
MON February 9, FRANK GONZALEZ JR. - Saturday night in Anaheim, WBA/WBC/IBF Super Flyweight Champion Vic Darchinyan (32-1-1, 26 KO’s) displayed his newest incarnation; Darchinyan the ambidextrous power boxer, who uses more than just his left to make his mark. What many expected to be an all out slugfest, was still a slugfest, but only at intervals and initiated mostly by his opponent, former champ, Jorge Arce (51-5-1, 39 KO’s), who after losing the first couple of rounds by being out-boxed from outside, decided to storm the castle and bring the fight inside to where his wild winging ways would hopefully work wonders.

Darchinyan-Arce: Finally
FRI February 6, BRIAN BLAKE - This Saturday night (9:00PM/EST) at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, Showtime Championship Boxing kicks off it's 2009 season with one of the most highly anticipated matchups in what will be a fight filled February as unified, WBA, WBC and IBF super flyweight champion Vic ‘The Raging Bull’ Darchinyan’ (31-1-1) takes on former three-time champion Jorge ‘Travieso’ Arce (54-4-1)...

Boxing Heats Up: The Top Five Fights to Watch
FRI February 6, JAMES STILLERMAN - If January is any indication of what is to come in 2009, than boxing fans are in for another great year. January featured a fight of the year candidate with the Luis Collazo-Andre Berto bout in which Berto won, an upset of the year contender with Sugar Shane Mosley dominating the 4-1 favorite Antonio Margarito, and a trainer of the year nominee, Nazim Richardson guiding Mosley to the victory and discovering the harden substance on Margarito's wrap, which might have played a significant role in the outcome of the fight.

Campbell Promises ‘Cement Shoes’ For Funeka
FRI January 30, BRIAN BLAKE - It doesn’t take much for the unified world lightweight champion Nate Campbell to get worked up, and when he does, he’s a force to be reckoned with. Ali ‘Rush Hour’ Funeka has proven just that.

On Saturday February 14th they both meet at the Bank Atlantic Center in Campbell’s native state of Florida. But it’s not the home field advantage that Campbell is banking on, he’s relying on his superior skill and resume...

Interview with Yusaf Mack's Trainer, John Tandy
WED January 28, ADRIAN LANE - Having moved over to the U.S. in January of 2007, British boxing trainer John Tandy spent a year in New York City, but recently relocated out to the high altitude camp in Lake Arrowhead, California. We managed to catch up with him recently to see how things are going with one of his fighters, Yusaf Mack, and the preparations for this big fight with Chris Henry, February 6th on ESPN2.

The New and Improved Shane Mosley TKO's Margarito in Nine
SUN January 25, FRANK GONZALEZ JR. - Saturday night in Los Angeles, 30 year old, former WBA Welterweight titlist Antonio “Tijuana Tornado” Margarito (37-6, 27 KO’s) saw his iron chin turned to tin, as he was beaten in every round by 37 year old “Sugar” Shane Mosley (46-5, 38 KO’s), who peppered Margarito with his jab and hammered him with his right hand, silencing the pro-Margarito crowd at the Staples Center as he broke Margarito down, culminating in a knockout in the ninth round.

Considering Margarito vs. Mosley
WED January 21, FRANK GONZALEZ JR. - This coming Saturday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles California, 30 year old Welterweight titlist Antonio Margarito (37-5, 27 KO’s) will defend his WBA strap against 37 year old Shane Mosley (45-5, 38 KO’s). While this fight may have some draw power due to the big name thing, based on recent events, I can’t imagine Mosley has enough left in him to beat a big, strong fighter like Margarito. But anything CAN happen...

Boxing Still Alive as Pacquiao, Hatton Close to Deal
TUE January 6, JAMES STILLERMAN - Manny "Pac-Man" Pacquiao's thoroughly dominating victory over Oscar De La Hoya a month ago helped to cement his status as the best pound for pound fighter in the world, as well as locking up the fighter of the year award. It also set up a blockbuster fight for 2009 against Ricky "The Hitman" Hatton. This fight could happen on May 2nd at the light welterweight division (140 pounds). The venue and location (probably in Las Vegas, Nevada) is the only thing that needs to be decided before this bout becomes official.

Three Things Golden Boy and Top Rank need to do Together in 2009 and beyond
MON December 29, ANDRES ANTONIO CARRIEDO - This is the time of year when all the lists come out. Slow news days are plentiful; so, writers plow through their (hopefully) fertile minds for interesting content. I am an editorialist though; so, I have been thinking for awhile now about how to put a different spin on the 'arbitrary number of things I'd like to see next year'' concept. In a recent interview, Daniel Edouard spoke to me about his desire to help build a vibrant club fight scene. In his eyes, the club fight scene is not only the foundation of the sport, but also the venue where the sport is most personal and interactive.

'Haitian Sensation' Edouard Looks to Take Career to the Next Level
FRI December 19, ANDRES ANTONIO CARRIEDO - By early 2004, Daniel 'The Haitian Sensation' Edouard had begun to establish himself as a fan favorite with his television friendly fighting style. He'd won his first 15 professional bouts and was starting to build up a fan following. At the time, though he had an undefeated record and had begun to move up the professional rankings, he was not quite able to commit fully to boxing. But he was held in solid regard by fans and the television networks. So, bigger opportunities began to present themselves to Team Edouard over the course of the next year.

A "British Three" for the 2009 Hall of Fame Ballot?
THU December 18, CLIFF ROLD - The 2008 vote for the International Boxing Hall of Fame is in and the results, as always, provide food for thought. Easy entrant Lennox Lewis was joined by overdue names 'Mysterious' Billy Smith and Brian Mitchell, overlooked talents Billy Soose and Gorilla Jones, and a debatable but ultimately selected Orlando Canizales. None was unworthy of their selection and left behind a career to be proud of. [Link Takes You To BoxingScene.com]

Pac-Man Gobbles Up the Golden Boy, Wins "Dream Match"
SUN December 7, FRANK GONZALEZ JR. - As we've all heard a million and one times, a good big man beats a good small man. That clich' mean nothing when the bigger man isn't all that good anymore and hasn't been in a few years. Its time to get out the Kleenex if you're a hard core DLH fan because Oscar's time is up. He demonstrated Saturday night that he no longer possesses the agility, strength or ability to compete at the highest levels of boxing anymore....

Pacquiao-Mayweather Countdown Begins
SUN December 7, CLIFF ROLD - The pre-fight build was clear'if a 35-year old Oscar De La Hoya (39-6, 30 KO) was shot, if he couldn't pull the trigger, then 29-year old current Lightweight and former Flyweight champion Manny Pacquiao (48-3-2, 36 KO) had a shot.

It turned out to be one of the great understatements of all time. [Link Takes You To BoxingScene.com]

Estrada, Andrade Impress at "Holiday Havoc"
WED December 2, JAMES STILLERMAN - Jimmy Burchfield's Classic Entertainment and Sports sponsored the "Holiday Havoc" in which Jason "Big Six" Estrada and Demetrius "Boo Boo" Andrade both former US Olympics emerged victorious in front of a full house at the Twin River Events Center in Lincoln, Rhode Island last Saturday night.

Williams Punishes Phillips, Wins WBO Titlle
MON December 1, FRANK GONZALEZ JR. - Saturday in Ontario California , Paul 'The Punisher' Williams (36-1, 27 KO's) administered a beating to former IBF Light Middleweight titlist, Verno Phillips (42-12-1, 21 KO's). Williams used his long jab and a battery of punches to constantly back Phillips into the ropes, where Williams directed his assault to the body and head of his shorter opponent. Phillips had a couple of good moments here and there, landing some clean shots, ducking, slipping and making Williams miss but the most damage he caused Williams came from a head butt late in the first round...
